After a five-year break, The Neighbourhood returned in November 2025 with their album “(((((ultraSOUND)))))”. With their melancholic sound and black-and-white aesthetic, the Californian band shaped an entire generation in the 2010s, and this record opens a new chapter. Rather than a simple comeback, the album expresses musical and personal growth, driven by new perspectives, emotional openness and a rediscovered joy in making music together.

For the recording sessions, Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels, Jeremy Freedman, Mikey Margott and Brandon Fried reunited after a three-year hiatus. With no label demands, time pressure or outside expectations, the band could rely entirely on its own dynamic. The result is an album that values intuition, atmosphere and the immediate interplay of the five musicians over polish and perfection.

Across 15 tracks, The Neighbourhood explore the tension between control and chaos, self-reflection and emotional immediacy. Singer Jesse Rutherford describes the music as a way to make visible feelings that are sometimes hard to put into words. That is exactly where the strength of “(((((ultraSOUND)))))” lies: the album makes room for uncertainty and inner contradiction without losing its melodic accessibility.

A central motif is the color grey. While the band stood for clear contrasts in 2013 with the song “No Grey”, on the new album grey becomes a symbol of change and maturity. Where black and white once dominated, there is now space for nuance, ambivalence and new ways of seeing. Musically, too, this shift is reflected in a sound that keeps The Neighbourhood’s signature melancholic atmosphere while allowing new facets.

With “(((((ultraSOUND)))))”, The Neighbourhood show themselves to be a band with nothing left to prove, which is precisely why they can take new paths. The return of Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels, Jeremy Freedman, Mikey Margott and Brandon Fried is marked by regained freedom, creative openness and trust in their own musical signature. An album about change, self-reflection and the beauty of in-between shades.
