HISTORY

Until 2019, concertgoers probably hadn’t really had the METAStadt in Vienna’s 22nd district on their radar. That changed dramatically and permanently with the premiere season of the METAStadt Open Airs. With this open-air concert series, the METAStadt site was transformed in 2019 into a cultural hotspot of Austria’s capital. In the following seasons of 2022 and 2024, the series became increasingly established, putting “the most beautiful building in Stadlau” in the musical spotlight for a few days every summer. The venue’s unique atmosphere has been appreciated not only by thousands of delighted visitors but also by renowned national and international artists.

In the premiere season, alongside the Grammy-winning American classic rockers GRETA VAN FLEET and the British indie sensation THE 1975, the German cult act SCOOTER delivered a thunderous opening. While there were only three concert nights in 2019 that first put METAStadt on the radar of music enthusiasts, by 2022 the series had grown considerably. German heavyweights such as ELEMENT OF CRIME, CRO, SARAH CONNOR, and SIDO shared the stage with international stars like MICHAEL KIWANUKA, SKUNK ANANSIE, ALT-J, and THE KOOKS.

In 2024, the organizers stayed true to this successful formula, curating a “festival-like setting” with a colorful line-up catering to all musical tastes. Highlights included the London-based neo-disco-soul band JUNGLE, Texas newcomers KHRUANGBIN, Australian sensation PARCELS, French electronic pioneers AIR, Berlin techno master PAUL KALKBRENNER, the “Godmother of Punk” PATTI SMITH, as well as KORN, CYPRESS HILL, CLAWFINGER, GIANT ROOKS, and many more.
